What we discovered was a constructive interference effect from the two edges. We had a suppression of phase so that when we shone light through the mask, a really, really bright peak appeared in the center of those two edges,” said Taylor.

IBM has licensed intellectual property associated with some of its power amplifiers to SiGe Semiconductor (Ottawa). The portfolio includes seven devices in various stages of design, mainly targeted at 2.5G and 3G handsets.

Under a separate agreement, SiGe Semiconductor is acquiring some design and test equipment from IBM which will be housed at the company's new facilities in the Boston area. Combined with the companies' existing foundry agreement, under which IBM will manufacture the power amplifiers for SiGe Semiconductor, the companies said the latest deal will also allow the devices to reach the market much quicker.

The first three power amplifiers for 2G and 2.5G cellular handsets are sampling to lead customers now and are sold under SiGe Semiconductor's RangeCharger brand. The company's product road map includes GPRS- and EDGE-capable quad-band GSM power amplifiers for 2.5G mobile handsets, as well as 4×4 matched CDMA power amplifier modules for 2.5G and 3G mobile handsets.

This agreement presents an ideal opportunity to expand our product line and enter new markets where our core expertise in silicon germanium will provide significant advantages to our customers,” said Jim Derbyshire, president and chief executive officer of SiGe Semiconductor.

With the broadest selection of silicon germanium power amplifiers on the market, we expect to quickly capture market share, and secure our place among lead competitors,” Derbyshire said.

SiGe Semiconductor's first products to sample include the SE5100 and SE5101 for CDMA/AMPS handsets operating in the 824-MHz to 849-MHz frequency band; and the SE5111 for CDMA/PCS handsets operating in the 1,850-MHz to 1,910-MHz band.

The total market for cellular power amplifiers used in 2G, 2.5G and 3G phones are expected to represent a $1.4 billion opportunity by 2005 according to a recent report form In-Stat/MDR. SiGe Semiconductor believes that silicon germanium-based power amplifiers will displace GaAs alternatives, as consumer pressures continue to drive handset prices down.

The company maintains that devices based on conventional high-volume SiGe fabrication processes can be produced at higheryields and at a fraction of the price of GaAs power amplifiers.

Phoenix, Ariz. — The NB100LVEP91 can turn three inputs and translate them into a NECL output. Operating at 2 GHz, this translator accepts LVPECL, LVTTL, LVCMOS, HSTL, CML, or LVDS inputs and translates them into -2.5, -3.3-, or -5-V NECL output signals. The translator delivers less than 0.5-ps jitter and 20-ps output-to-output skew. Overall propagation delay is expected to be less than 650 ps. The translator is housed in a 20-pin SOIC and is aimed at networking and telecom designs.

The message from many OEMs is that they are trying to survive the downturn and cut costs. They're pushing many of the tactical requirements back onto the EMS companies and saying that when business comes back they will rebuild,” said Ken Bradley, former chief procurement officer at Nortel Networks Corp. and now president of Shared Insight Inc., a consulting firm in Ottawa, Ontario.

[Supply chain managers and procurement executives] are doing what they can to keep their heads above water,” Bradley said.

Those in the field, however, contend they are making some strides with high-level, strategic projects that will both reduce costs and bring their companies long-range efficiencies.

In some cases, automating procurement transactions has been a major focus.

Flextronics International Pte. Ltd., Singapore, is working with software and services vendor RiverOne Inc., Westlake Village, Calif., to roll out RiverOne's procurement tool at several sites.
