Herndon, Va. — The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) has scheduled several lead-free forums at the IPC Printed Circuits Expo, APEX and Designers Summit in Los Angeles, Calif., February 18-22. The industry-led consortium also plans to provide a sneak peak of its 2007 Roadmap.

The iNEMI 2007 Roadmap will not be released to the industry until after March 5, but the keynote session will provide insight into some of the key highlights and trends identified by the roadmap.

iNEMI has also scheduled additional forums and meetings. The Optimizing Lead-Free Processes Forum will review some of iNEMI's Pb-free projects that focus on Pb-free processes in areas such as wave soldering, rework and mixed soldering. This session is one of the conference's free forums.

iNEMI is also a co-sponsor of IPC’s Reliability Summit: Keeping Industry Reliability Test Protocols Current with Rapidly Changing Markets. This free one-day session will discuss industry initiatives to standardize reliability testing. This summit will also address how environmental regulations and the higher temperatures used in lead-free applications are causing concern over the reliability testing protocols used. This summit is organized in cooperation with the Government Electronics and Information Technology Association (GEIA), HDPUG and JEDEC.

In addition, several iNEMI Technology Integration Groups (TIGs) — Heat Transfer, Optoelectronics, Environmentally Conscious Electronics, and Board Assembly and Substrates — will hold gap analysis” meetings. Each roadmap chapter includes a list of gaps that are categorized and prioritized by iNEMI's TIGs. Click the link for more information about iNEMI activities at the summit.

We don't believe this [dual-format player] will unify the industry,” said Lucas Covers, chief marketing officer of Philips Electronics, a member of the Blu-ray Association. The LG player, he said, will only add complexity for both consumers and content providers.

It's no great benefit to the consumer, either, when you consider the price point of the dual deck,” said Stewart Muller, president of Philips Consumer Electronics North America.

But Chris Crotty, a consumer electronics analyst at market research firm iSuppli Corp. (El Segundo, Calif.), said companies that dismiss the dual-format player are doing so out of fear. I think [the dual-format deck] is great,” Crotty said. It's great for the consumers and great for the market.” Even the $1,000-plus price tag is competitive, Crotty said, for consumers who have invested thousands in home theater equipment and want to future-proof their setup. Eventually, Crotty added, high sales volumes could drive the price of the players below $300.

Crotty believes other vendors will follow LG's lead. If you asked Samsung today, they would probably say they are committed to Blu-ray only,” he said. But knowing how Samsung likes to dominate markets,” it may add a dual-format player.

The HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps appear divided on the matter.
