FRANKFURT, Germany — Fujitsu Ltd's European Microcontroller Design Centre today announced a new CAN microcontroller that combines a Full-CAN bus interface and on-chip flash memory.

Aimed at automotive and industrial embedded control applications, the MB90F497 is designed to compete against low-cost products that offer only a basic CAN interface and an 8-bit architecture.

Fujitsu's MB90F497 is based on the company's F2MC-LX 16-bit microprocessor core and CAN bus macro. A Full-CAN bus interface, conforming to V2.0 part A and part B, is combined with 64 kilobytes of single-voltage flash, which serves as on-chip user-programmable memory. A flexible message-buffer scheme using eight buffers offers increased functionality over traditional CAN designs, the company said.

A system clock employing an on-chip phase-lock-loop (PLL) clock multiplier provides an internal instruction cycle time of 62.5 nanoseconds from an external 4-MHz clock. A 32-kHz subsystem clock is also available for additional power-saving modes and real-time measurement. The chip has 10 different power-saving modes, including sleep, stop, CPU intermittent mode, and hardware standby pin.

Fujitsu said it plans to price the MB90F497 competitively in order to serve both high-end 8-bit and entry-level 16-bit applications.

Fabricated in 0.5-micron CMOS technology and housed in a QFP-64 package with 0.65-mm pin-pitch, the new chip will be available in sampling quantities during the first quarter of 2000, with production volumes scheduled for the second quarter.

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Brooks Automation Inc. here reported that its revenues for the fourth quarter of fiscal 1999, ended Sept. 30, were $33.9 million, an increase of 65% from revenues of $20.6 million in the same quarter a year ago, and up 28% sequentially.

Revenues for the fiscal year were essentially even, at $103.9 million, up from revenues of $100.3 million for fiscal 1998.

All revenue amounts reflect the combined financial statements of Brooks Automation and Smart Machines Inc., a San Jose-based maker of vacuum robots for semiconductor wafer handling that Brooks acquired in July (see July 8 story).

In previewing the new international road map, representatives with the SIA suggested that a whole new category of P-SoC” products was emerging and required the development of different technologies and architectures than today's cost-effective SoC” designs.

Growing concerns revolve around challenges in maintaining a rate of improvement in electrical performance of about two-times every two years in high-performance components,” said the 1999 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, which charts requirements and possible solutions for chip making over the next 15 years.
