In another development, the Financial Times said MCI is still negotiating with Qwest Communications over the latter's bid to acquire MCI. Qwest has presented a higher bid for MCI, which so far has chosen Verizon because it believes the financially healthy Verizon would be a better fit than Qwest. Unlike the other former Baby Bells, which are busily rolling out fiber optic networks, Qwest has eschewed the high-speed technology.

SAN JOSE, Calif. &#151 NVE Corp. has revised its strategy in the MRAM market, by saying on Tuesday (April 19) that it has moved towards an intellectual-property (IP) model in the arena.

NVE (Eden Prairie, Minn.) said that it had been pushing both IP and standard products for the emerging MRAM market, but the company will apparently discontinue its efforts to sell devices.

The company commented on its MRAM strategy after being informed recently by Cypress Semiconductor Corp. that the chip maker has discontinued its efforts to develop MRAM products. Cypress (San Jose) plans to sell the assets of its MRAM subsidiary.

NVE's other MRAM licensees include Freescale Semiconductor Inc. and Honeywell International.

Cypress demonstrated 256-kilobit MRAMs working in customers' systems, which was an important accomplishment,” NVE President and CEO Daniel A. Baker said in a statement.

Sunnyvale, Calif. — Maxim Integrated Products has added three members to its high-speed low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) SerDes family.

The MAX9234, MAX9236 and MAX9238 are hot-swappable, 21-bit, DC-balanced LVDS devices that can deserialize three LVDS serial inputs into 21 single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS outputs, and communicate over a three-wire twisted pair or differential line.

Each device reduces the number of wires or traces to 8 from 22, which simplifies design and saves space and lowers cost in system interconnects such as cables or backplanes. Hot-swappable capability increases fault tolerance and allows quick frequency programming.
