Phone companies are scrambling to be the comprehensive service provider. The first step to enter this broadband party was Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). For better or worse, high-speed data access and effective virtual private networks (VPNs) have made the virtual office as convenient as the actual office when on the road, with the possible exception of downloading large images or photo-heavy PowerPoint presentations. Coupled with the cell phone and PDA, of course, this powerful technology assures that there's no reason to be unreachable when away. Except, of course, if it's by choice.

Unfortunately, I have found that one of these technology tools can still be intermittent, particularly on personal travel. High-speed data—something I make sure is in place when booking business travel—isn't exactly at the top of my list of an accommodation's key features when planning personal time off.

Of course, there are pockets of wireless-access and last-mile solutions, but by and large, wired systems dominate today's high-speed consumer access.

Cable systems are based on cable modems that rely on use of DOCSIS system, which is powerful and continually evolving modem technology that started as a best-effort Internet access service, but whose scope is now expanding into voice and video. Telephone companies, at least some of the large ones, have made their plans to build out deep fiber networks, even direct to the home, a high-profile strategy. This shift is both technological and cultural for the phone companies. Some are aggressively pursuing new technology, some are investing incrementally, and some are doing a wait-and-see, which can also mean let-someone-else-suffer-the-hard-lessons.

Meanwhile, for high-speed data service from the phone company, today's systems implement high-speed access using ADSL technology. There was and continues to be much discussion over these precious last stretches of twisted-wire pairs, because they are the most cumbersome and difficult hurdle. As the centralized phone network evolved its innards to become faster, as optical links replaced electronic links, as switching systems evolved from humans plugging and unplugging cords, to automatic mechanical switching, to electronic switching, and ultimately to intelligent electronics handling and managing traffic from the individual call to the largest aggregated trunk, the last mile of wires stood its ground in the outdoor plant. While the phone companies invented and became experts in voice traffic, signaling, and still unmatched technologies such as SONET, these wires going to individual homes remained, presenting an obstacle for anything but voice or low-speed transmissions.

Imagine being a plant engineer, knowing what you had originally optimized this system for, and what you had evolved it for with regard to fax and V.x modems. One day, your boss asks you to figure out a way for it to carry T1 data or a digital video stream. This obstacle quickly came to the forefront of getting the most from the wired infrastructure, particularly as rapid growth in Internet access in the early 1990s drove the demand for the type of bandwidth to the home that the wire pair was ill-prepared to deliver.
