TEL AVIV, Israel — Prior-Tech Ltd. and an unidentified Chinese company have agreed to establish a plant in Shanghai that will manufacture substrates designed by the Israeli company's Amitec Ltd. subsidiary.

Amitec and the Chinese partner will evenly split ownership of the manufacturing venture, which is expected to come online in 2007. Investment in the plant is expected to total $11 million over three years.

Amitec has developed performance chip carriers and flip-chip ball-grid array substrates that support flip chips with more than 2,000 I/Os, pitches of less than 150 micrometers and speed requirements exceeding 40 GHz. The company says the substrates withstand assembly and operating temperatures of more than 260&#176C and provide superior flatness and power distribution.

Prior-Tech operates several wholly and majority-owned subsidiaries in the electronics packaging and related application-systems industries, including PCB Technologies Ltd ., an electronics manufacturing services firm that contracts primarily with U.S. and Israeli systems houses, and Camtek Ltd., a provider of pc board yield enhancement solutions. Camtek recently acquired Inspectech Ltd., an Israeli startup developer of wafer-level inspection and analysis systems for back-end semiconductor manufacturing .

San Jose, Calif. — Boasting low insertion loss and high isolation, two key parameters of filtering devices, Avago Technologies has launched two film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) duplexers for handsets, PC data cards and other wireless products operating in the U.S. personal communications service (PCS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) frequency bands. The duplexers also claim a significantly smaller size and higher performance compared to surface acoustic wave (SAW) and ceramic duplexers, typically used in these applications.

Unveiled at 3GSM World Congress this week, both FBAR duplexers — the ACMD-7402 and ACMD-7601 — are housed in the industry's smallest, ultra-thin package with a 3.8 x 3.8-mm footprint and 1.3-mm height. Avago's Microcap bonded-wafer, chip-scale packaging and FBAR technology contribute to the ultra-small size.

The key role of a duplexer is to separate incoming communications from outgoing communications, which allows for simultaneous two-way voice and data transmission, and because it sits in the RF front end, it has a direct impact on system performance.

This means a couple of things — the size of the duplexer directly impacts the size of the handset and current draw influences performance. As a result, Avago focused on reducing the size of the duplexers along with reducing the amount of current draw which ultimately extends battery life.
